For any role — individuals or employers

When should an employer choose this?

Use a Basic check when the position is not legally eligible for a Standard or Enhanced check. It can support general recruitment for roles such as construction, hospitality, retail and ordinary office work.

What will it show?

Unspent convictions and conditional cautions held on the Police National Computer.

Available for every type of role

The employer can arrange it with the applicant’s consent

Does not include spent records, local police information or barred-list information

Not suitable where work with children or vulnerable adults makes the role eligible for a higher-level check.

For eligible roles through employers

When should an employer choose this?

Use a Standard check only when the position is covered by the legal eligibility rules. Examples can include interpreters, solicitors, barristers, accountants and certain regulated financial roles.

What will it show?

It is intended for eligible positions of trust, not ordinary recruitment.

Spent and unspent convictions, cautions, warnings and reprimands, subject to the statutory filtering rules.

Must be requested through an employer or eligible organisation

Provides more information than a Basic check

Does not include local police information or a barred-list check

For eligible roles involving work with children or vulnerable adults

When should an employer choose this?

Use an Enhanced check for an eligible role involving work with children or vulnerable adults. The job title alone is not enough—the person’s actual duties, workplace and frequency of contact determine eligibility.

What will it show?

The information included in a Standard DBS check, together with relevant information held by local police.

May include a Children’s or Adults’ Barred List check when the role is eligible

A barred-list check is not automatically included with every Enhanced check

Eligibility depends on the duties, workplace, frequency and who the applicant works with

The DBS Process

A DBS check can also been known as a CRB check, a criminal record check, or a police check.

A DBS check will show an individual’s criminal record history.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. Therefore it replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA)

DBS checks are required by individuals, or by employers for many job roles, and the type of check your employee will need will depend specifically on the role they are applying for

After completing the application form, you will need to send us identity documents that have been verified by a ‘responsible person’ in the UK, or a Post Office. Once we receive these, we submit your application.

We aim to get your results within 12 working hours, and your certificate within 5 days

After completing the application form, your account manager will thoroughly check for errors and omissions and email you accordingly

The employer has already verified the identity documents so we don’t need to see them
